Paterangi School is a decile 8 country school situated 8 minutes from Te Awamutu and 25 minutes from Hamilton, under the gaze of Mount Pirongia.
Paterangi is a country school that nurtures and supports students from their developmental years, into young adults. Many of our students travel each day from
Te Awamutu because their parents want their children to experience the unique qualities that only a country school can provide, academic excellence with strong personal values, and committed community support. As a school we are very proud and protective of our “uniqueness.”
We work hard to ensure that all students are catered for and focused on learning to the best of their ability, socially, academically, personally, and culturally.
Our students do extremely well at interschool sports events and achieve extremely well at college and university.
Students are immersed in an environment that places a high emphasis on becoming best they can be, valuing ourselves, valuing other people, using
initiative, and developing high order thinking skills.

Paterangi School also ensures that its students are prepared for the 21st century, keeping abreast of innovations in education and adapting so that our
students become intelligent young adults with high personal values.
Our school logo, designed by a respected local Maori artist symbolises what Paterangi School stands for. The Arms of the wharenui symbolise the strength
support we gather from each other as a community. This strength nurtures the values we hold within, academic excellence with strong personal values. The top of the wharenui
symbolises our ongoing commitment to strive towards higher goals at all times.

Here is why...

At Paterangi School we do things with people as our first priority.
At our school we base every decision, every course of action on what will make a difference for the children at our school, it’s that simple. We keep the most important thing, the learning and personal
development of the children of our school, the most important thing.
We believe that we are accountable firstly to the children at our school and their families, not the Education Review Office, not the Ministry of Education, not what is politically correct or the flavour of the
month. We hold ourselves accountable to the children of our school and their families. Its that simple.
We don't let the challenges that others put into the “too hard basket” stop us. We have found that if we put the needs of our children first, and then ask ourselves how we can meet these needs, nothing is impossible!
That is why on average, 90% of children at Paterangi School achieve at or above the expected level for their age in reading, writing and maths.
We value parents / caregivers being an important part of a child's learning, and work very hard to ensure that parents can be involved. That is why we hold an increasing number of school events like swimming sports, triathlons, school productions etc out of school hours, so that parents can attend, who love to watch their child compete, but work commitments make it difficult.
We believe that parents want to support the work that the school does, put do not know how. That is why we hold parent education evenings for specific age groups to work with parents so that they know how to help their children at home.
We fully fund things that are really important, like extra staffing in classrooms, to ensure class numbers stay low.
We monitor children's progress closely, especially when they start school, so that if a child is not achieving to the expected level, we intervene quickly.
We use our time at staff meetings to focus on the teaching and learning at our school, continually up skilling ourselves to stay on the cutting edge of what is effective for children's learning to provide the best education available to the children of our school.
We believe that children want to learn in a safe, encouraging, supportive environment. That is why we are very proactive regarding children who struggle to demonstrate our school values. Teachers contact parents at the first sign of trouble, and we have no tolerance for behaviours that detract from a child's learning, or make others feel unsafe.
At Paterangi School, we do things with people as our first priority, and that is why I am proud to be principal of such a wonderful environment.
Welcome to Paterangi School where we aim for Academic Excellence with Values.

Inside Classrooms

A core component of learning for the children is homework. At Paterangi school homework will;

• relate to class activities where ever possible
• be at the level for the children to achieve independently or with minimal assistance

At Paterangi School, the way we facilitate the learning process for children is through;
• focusing on developing skills the children will need across a multitude of learning experiences to prepare them for their future
• adapting to individual needs of students
• focusing on the learning needs of the children
• providing learning intentions that provide a clear direction for learning
• including specific success criteria that provides a clear picture of what the children are expected to learn
In order to do this, the learning experiences provided to children;
• are specific and relevant
• place an emphasis on higher order thinking skills for all children
• are at their level and achievable

CHARTER: The School Charter and School policies are kept in the office and are available on request.

CLEANING: A voluntary school cleaning scheme was introduced in 1987. This was seen as an alternative to School fees to assist with costs for extra-curricular activities.
The benefits were quickly seen by parents at that time and the scheme was adopted. Each family is required to do only one weekend stint per year and will be notified one term in
advance of their weekend. The pupils see to the daily cleaning tasks during the week. The Board pays a cleaner to attend to the toilet areas daily.
A school key will be sent home with a member of the rostered family on the Friday prior to the weekend. The Board of Trustees arranges the commercial cleaning task at the end of each year.

Newsletters will be sent by e-mail if requested. Special notices may be issued as necessary.

PARENT HELPERS: Teachers may request 'parent' helpers to assist with programmes from time to time. In the past the response has been most encouraging.
Assistance with making and creating classroom aids and resources, and maintaining and repairing library books are the main areas where help would be appreciated.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION: A parent/guardian signed note is required by pupils who are unable to take part because of illness or disability.
Swimming is part of the programme with teachers deciding on the suitability of the weather.

P.T.A: Chairperson: Mrs. Denise Creagh, Secretary: Mrs Kirsty Gillespie, Treasurer: Mrs. Debbie Glasson. This association is made up of parents of the school with the basic aim of bringing a
closer relationship between home and school through organising social events, forum discussions on school syllabuses and providing hospitality for visitors.
Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month, with minutes displayed in the Library.

REPORTING TO PARENTS: The school is very proud of its learning journals. These go home to parents in Week 9 of every term. These journals give both parents and children
an ongoing and informative record of the learning that children have undertaken during the term. The focus of the learning journals is to provide both feed back and feed forward to students.
At the end of the year we include a “Year in Review” in the learning journal to give parents a summary of learning for the year. Written reports on individual pupil's progress and development are
issued to parents at the end of each school year. Parent meetings happen formally at the beginning of term 2, and informally throughout the year. We encourage parents to make a time through out the
